religious education

 Religious Education Vision

Religious Education is an integral part of our curriculum, providing opportunities for spiritual, moral, social, academic and cultural development of every child. Our bespoke Religious Education Curriculum provides an opportunity for our children to learn about Islam and other world religions, equipping children with opportunities to develop knowledge, tolerance and respect to engage in religious and moral discussions and live peacefully alongside others, with an informed, respectful and understanding approach to different views and experiences.

Through meaningful discussions around moral and religious concepts, children are inspired to see themselves as stewards (Khulafaa) of the Earth - with a duty to care for creation, uphold values and contribute to their community, society and wider world as the citizens of the future. Our rich R.E. curriculum helps children strengthen their knowledge of all world religions as well as their own faith and values, giving them the confidence to practice their faith with sincerity and pride, whilst also being respectful of other faiths. It draws on the example of Prophet Muhammad and other religious personalities to nurture children to encourage children to be thoughtful, reflective and socially responsible, whilst also being courageous advocates for their faith and values who pioneer change for good both in school and beyond.

How we learn in Religious Education
At Hujjat Primary School, Religious Education is a journey of exploration, reflection and discovery. We embed, explore and showcase our values: service, gratitude, excellence, integrity, respect and compassion in all aspects of R.E, allowing for R.E. to impact more than what our children know but who they become. All viewpoints and beliefs of children and staff are respected, encouraging the sharing of experiences and perspectives freely and with confidence.

Our bespoke R.E. curriculum, explores all world religions with Islam being the main faith and thread of units taught. The curriculum is designed to encourage deeper thinking through the exploration of ‘big questions’ – about purpose, belief, identity, morality and more. Through these discussions pupils develop respect and a deeper understanding of their own faith, as well view points of a variety of world religions.

As part of our curriculum, children partake in collective worship, assemblies, discussions with people of different faiths, visits to places of worship, and a whole host of enrichment and outreach events.  They engage in a variety of activities including, handling artefacts, exploring sacred texts, speaking to people from different faiths and visiting places for worship to enhance their experience and understanding of  all the major religions. In addition, we hold many community events and invite parents to participate and celebrate, strengthening the bond between school, home and the community and creating shared experiences, to spark curiosity and provide opportunities for meaningful discussion and practice of teachings and values explored in lessons.  These rich and varied experiences, help children to become inquisitive and confident learners, asking brave questions about the world around them. Our aim is to support children in developing their knowledge of Islam in relation to different religions and the understanding of different world views whilst also developing a thoughtful, respectful and responsible approach, to proudly practice religion and good values in school and the wider community

How we deliver the Curriculum

Our R.E. curriculum follows the Early Years Framework and broadly the Standard Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE). Our youngest children begin by exploring RE through their own and others’ experiences and by developing their understanding of the world. Religious Education is taught by discussing and reflecting on ‘big questions’ outlined in our RE overview. Children learn and explore how these questions are reflected and explained in Islam and other major religions. By learning in this way, the children are able to see not just the differences and similarities between others and themselves but also develop empathy and respect towards all peoples’ faiths, beliefs and practices and gain an understanding of different viewpoints and beliefs to enable them to think deeply about the ‘big questions’
