Modern Foreign Language Vision
At Hujjat Primary School, we aim to provide a learning environment where our children will grow to love and learn the Arabic language through engaging and innovative opportunities. Our enhanced curriculum, focusses on Fus’ha (classical) Arabic enabling students to bring reading, writing, listening and speaking skills with confidence. We are a school dedicated to providing children with the necessary foundation to learn Arabic, to benefit them both academically and spiritually, by equipping them with a language widely understood across many countries but also strengthening their relationship with the Qur’an by enabling them to access its meanings
How we learn Arabic
Arabic is taught discretely by a specialist teacher in EYFS and Key Stage 1, with a focus on developing children’s phonetical awareness of the different Arabic letters and sounds. Children also begin to build a bank of basic vocabulary, helping them to use and recognise familiar Arabic words with growing confidence.
As they move into Key Stage 2 children acquire language skills through a more formal approach under continued guidance of our specialist teacher. At this stage, pupils extend their vocabulary further and refine their pronunciation, listening, reading and writing skills as they learn about a variety of topics and begin to compose their own sentences, enabling them to communicate more effectively in Arabic. Throughout all stages, our curriculum is rooted in Fus’ha (classical) Arabic, the language of the Quran. This not only equips children with a language that is widely understood across the Arab world, but also nurtures their spiritual growth by deepening their connection to the Quran.
How we deliver the Curriculum
Learning a modern foreign language is not statutory in EYFS and Key Stage 1, yet we teach Arabic so children become familiarised with different letters and sounds in readiness to develop their understanding, reading, writing and speaking skills across a range of topics in Arabc at Key Stage 2.
In Key Stage 2, we have weekly Arabic lessons, taught by specialist teachers. Teachers assess children’s learning by addressing misconceptions, developing vocabulary and carrying out regular speaking and listening checks. To enhance learning inside and outside the classroom, as well as input from a specialist teacher and opportunities for role play and Arabic conversation with peers, pupils also benefit from the use of our online learning platform, ‘LanguageNut’, which supports vocabulary building, grammar practice and independent learning in a fun and interactive way.
