History Vision
History is everywhere—from our own families and local communities to the wider world. The world around us has been shaped and influenced by events and people in the past. Our vision for History is to inspire curiosity and a lifelong fascination with the past. We aim for pupils to understand that history is about real people and real events, and that exploring the past helps us make sense of the present and consider how we can shape the future.
We want children to leave school with a secure understanding of significant events, people, and periods, both in Britain and the wider world. They develop the skills and confidence to think critically like historians, appreciating the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies, and the causes and consequences of historical change.
How We Learn History
We encourage children to be curious and to develop a sense of themselves as historians. Pupils learn to ask questions, investigate, critically analyse evidence, and draw reasoned conclusions about the past.
High-quality history lessons are enquiry-led and designed to develop deeper thinking and a secure chronological understanding. Pupils explore a range of sources, including artefacts, photographs, and documents, to interpret evidence and understand different perspectives. History is also brought to life through trips, visitors, and practical experiences, helping children connect learning with real-life contexts.
Through these experiences, children gain a sense of identity, see connections between past and present, and develop the curiosity, resilience, and critical thinking skills needed to become thoughtful historians.
How We Deliver the Curriculum
We follow the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum for history, supported by our own progression of historical skills and key vocabulary. In the Early Years, children learn about their personal history, families, and communities, forming the foundation of their understanding of history.
As pupils progress through the school, they develop chronological awareness, deepen their knowledge of significant people, events, and periods, and learn to interpret evidence, evaluate reliability, and communicate their findings effectively. Fieldwork, handling artefacts, and engaging with local history provide practical opportunities to apply and consolidate their learning.
Through this approach, history at Hujjat Primary School develops inquisitive, knowledgeable, and reflective learners who understand the world, think critically, and approach history with curiosity, care, and integrity.
