English Vision
At Hujjat Primary School, we believe that reading is a vital life skill that unlocks a child’s potential and opens the door to lifelong learning. Our vision is to foster confident, curious readers who not only decode and understand texts, but also find joy and meaning in them. We aim to nurture a love of reading through rich, diverse texts so that every child leaves us empowered, inspired, and ready to lead. In addition to this we use the Little Wandle Scheme to support reading across the school.
We view writing as a holistic subject that nurtures communication, creativity, and self-expression. Through a carefully planned curriculum that includes a wide range of rich text types—fiction, non-fiction, and poetry—children develop the skills to write with purpose and confidence. Each unit enables pupils to apply key National Curriculum objectives in meaningful contexts, supporting their ability to express ideas clearly and for different audiences. Writing at HPS goes beyond grammar and punctuation; it is a tool for thinking, reflecting, and connecting with the world.
How we learn English
We value our children interests and listen to their pupil voice to shape our English curriculum. This gives us flexibility in our teaching methods to plan and provide engaging lessons, whereby children are actively learning in a variety of exciting ways. We support children’s progress by providing positive feedback and clear next steps to support their development. We understand that children have many different learning styles and careful planning ensures that all of their needs are met so that they achieve success.
How we deliver the Curriculum
We follow the National Curriculum and model high standards of language by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, based on a rich curriculum and quality texts which appropriately challenges pupils. We aim to promote a positive attitude to English and develop a life-long love of language and communication by learning about literacy skills and progression of skills through high quality teaching, modelling and scaffolding at every opportunity.
