DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Design Technology Vision

Engineers, fashion designers, carpenters, architects…all have something in common: Design Technology! DT is the perfect way to develop children’s problem-solving, resilience, teamwork, and critical thinking - lifelong skills that are transferable across all areas of learning. It allows children to understand how people, past and present, including Islamic and cultural designers, have shaped the world through creativity and innovation. At Hujjat Primary School, we aim to inspire children to see themselves as makers and thinkers, capable of designing and creating solutions that reflect both practical skills and cultural awareness.

How we learn Design Technology

At Hujjat Primary School, children are given opportunities to see how things work and how they are made. Through hands-on activities, project-based learning, and exploration of tools and materials, children develop their knowledge, vocabulary, and skills in DT. They are encouraged to think critically, collaborate with others, solve problems, and reflect on their designs. By studying a diverse range of designers - including Islamic and cultural designers whose work celebrates our heritage and community. Children learn to draw inspiration from a variety of perspectives while connecting their learning to the world around them.

How we deliver the curriculum

Our curriculum follows the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum, supported by the Kapow scheme, which provides high-quality, structured lessons to ensure children continually develop and refine their skills and techniques without detracting from our own bespoke provision. From Early Years, children are given time to experiment with tools, materials, and techniques, building confidence and laying the foundations for creative problem-solving.

As children progress, DT becomes increasingly project-based. They focus on specific techniques or skills, working towards designing, creating, and evaluating purposeful final products. Throughout this process, children are encouraged to think critically about what works, what can be improved, and how their designs reflect both creativity and practicality.

Children’s achievements are celebrated through exhibitions, curriculum evenings, and displays around the school, giving them pride in their creations while fostering a lifelong love of design and making.
