Art and Design Vision
Art at our school is a celebration of creativity, imagination, and faith. It gives children the freedom to explore, experiment, and express themselves while developing critical thinking, practical skills, and confidence that extend to all areas of learning. We study a diverse range of artists from around the world, gaining inspiration from many perspectives, but what makes our approach unique is our focus on Islamic and cultural artists who connect with and celebrate our community. In our classrooms, there are no “wrong” answers—only endless possibilities to create, imagine, and succeed, while learning to see and reflect the beauty of God’s creation in all its forms.
How we learn art
At Hujjat Primary School, the way we learn art is rooted in creativity, imagination, and connection. We thoughtfully choose a diverse range of artists—both local and global—whose work reflects our school community and inspires our students. Local artists have helped shape our environment, from the welcoming front reception to the playground, hall, and prayer room, making our spaces vibrant, inspiring, and uniquely ours. Children explore art through a variety of media, drawing inspiration from these artists to develop critical thinking, practical skills, and confidence. In doing so, they learn to express themselves, celebrate their culture, and reflect the beauty of God’s creation in all that they create.
How we deliver the curriculum
At Hujjat Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum follows the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum, supported by the Kapow scheme, which provides high-quality, structured lessons to ensure children continually develop and refine their skills and techniques without detracting from our own bespoke provision. From the earliest years, children are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of tools and materials, expressing their ideas freely while developing gross and fine motor skills—the foundation for their artistic growth throughout the school.
Children explore a variety of techniques, including painting, drawing, sculpture, printing, collage, textiles, and digital art. Each technique is taught in relation to high-quality artists from around the world, with a particular focus on Islamic and cultural artists whose work connects to and celebrates our community. This approach allows children to develop technical skills while nurturing creativity, imagination, and cultural awareness.
A unique feature of our curriculum is the integration of Forest School learning, where children engage with art in nature. This allows them to explore, experiment, and create using natural materials, fostering a deep connection to the environment while reflecting on the beauty of God’s creation.
Throughout their artistic journey, children are encouraged to think critically, evaluate their work, and reflect on the beauty in what they create. Their achievements are celebrated through exhibitions, curriculum evenings, and displays across the school, fostering pride, confidence, and a lifelong love of art.
